This term we are working with the renowened English author at E. E. Cassiano Mendes . It´s a challenge. I was fearful on how to address the issue with teens. I ´ve started talking about Romeo and Juliet which is easier and more accessible. To my surprise the students are already reading other stories by Shakespeare. My favorite, King Lear is going to be the next to be studied. I´ve been through step by step what http://www.bbclearning.com/ has suggest. I´ve split the story up , went over some important scenes, and researched on the author´s life.
The photos above show ' Divisa Alegre - Culturart/2007". The students of Facees organized the Literature stand. Many children and teens could get in touch with a bit of the Shakesperean universe.
Studying grammar contextualized with a story creates and builds a sense of unity and purpose to the student. Some students get pleasure from listening to the stories being told first, then they go over through the exercises .
The Romeo and Juliet story is just the pretext ( or excuse) here it has both meanings.
Furthermore I´ve pointed out, their age. Juliet was just a teen. I´ve brougt the subject on a teen´s level. I´ve emphasied the way teens feel and act, their anxiety and rush to get things done . I think they could understand this and they realized that 'Romeo and Juliet' is much more than a love story. It´s a way of telling us that life is bigger than ourselves. That when we try to give a little hand to destiny/life , it brings us to a halt. We can´t play God. I´ve also called their attention to our mistakes and misunderstandings and prejudices. Romeo wasn´t able to live beyond the values and prejudices surrounding him, that´s why he killed Julieta´s cousin. I´ve also made them answer a big question: How do you handle conflicts? How do you deal with facts and reality? How do you face yourself: through the mirror of reason or through the paths your feelings leads you through?
Some students are going to act out, others are drawing cartoons. Some photos will be added to this blog .
